Toronto Highways

There are some nuts who want to destroy every highway in Toronto; well, not every one, just the municipal ones.

Here's a map

Green are Provincial highways.
Red are Municipal highways.
Purple was proposed highways that never ended up getting built.

Since this is my personal blog; I'll just make you look at another map right now. I'm a firm believer that you guys are smart enough to draw your own conclusions.

And now I'll tell you the conclusions you should have drawn:

First, stopping the Spadina Expressway was really really stupid. Even in car friendly europe (and I picked cities that had fewer highways, there are cities with far more I did not show)

Second, destroying every municipal expressway in Toronto would not make us like Europe, it would make us closer to a third world country.

And lastly, the evidence is clear, taking down the "elevated portion" of the Gardiner, is actually in line with how cities are laid out in Europe and around the world.

I generally have been opposed to the removal of that portion of the Gardiner, but, the evidence does not back that up. As such, I feel forced to change my mind on the issue, and no longer oppose this.

  1. I'll expand more, in a separate post (probably a series of posts) on how stopping the Spadina expressway was the watershed in the turning of Toronto, Ontario, and Canada into shit. I firmly believe it was the stupidest mistake made in the politics of this city, and province, since John Cabot found some new land.
